Eagles Soar Past
Carver
Oak Mountain obtained their
fourth straight win easily over the Carver Rams on Senior night, 34-0. It did
not take long for Oak Mountain to put away the 0-5 Rams, scoring two
touchdowns within 40 seconds of each other early on in the first quarter. The
Eagles were able to go deep into their depth chart early into the game,
allowing hard working players that may not see the field as much get the
playing time they have earned. Backup quarterback Jordan Spivey came in for
Drew McKnight late in the first quarter and ended the game with 110 rushing
yards and a pair of TD’s on the ground as well. The defense, as usual, forced
several three and outs and picked up their second shutout of the season.
The Eagles defense set the
tone early giving the offense good field position, which was the story most of
the game, and the Eagles offense was able to score on only three plays to open
the scoring. After 50 combined yards on the first two runs, Drew McKnight hit
favorite wide out Michael Connell for a 14 yard TD reception to open up a 7-0
lead. On the very next play for Carver, Kent Fullington jumped a route giving
him an interception return for a touchdown blowing the game open early. It
was one more scoring drive for McKnight and the rest of the first-team offense
before they took a seat for the remainder of the game. The final touchdown
was set up by other senior receiver Michael Nordyke’s 40 yard catch and run,
and punched in by McKnight on a 9 yard scamper.
Early in the second quarter,
backup QB Jordan Spivey got his first rushing touchdown on a 5 yard run, the
short 39 yard drive was set up by Eric McKelvy’s punt return off of a 30 yard
Carver punt. On the next Ram possession the Eagles got their second
interception of the game, this one by Thomas Holloway. However, this time the
offense could not convert off the turnover and the remainder of the half ended
in 50 yards between both teams as the Eagles took a 28-0 halftime lead.
The second half was very
basic for the Eagles both offensively and defensively, with nearly every
player seeing a piece of the action off the bench. This was great for some
senior reserves to get some well deserved playing time late in the season.
Oak Mountain scored its lone touchdown of the half on a 7 yard Jordan Spivey
touchdown run with 3:45 left in the third quarter. Oak Mountain’s defense
held onto the shutout in the fourth quarter by coming up with two fourth down
stops from inside the red zone. The second stop came on their last possession
on a stop from the five yard line. From there the Eagles ran the ball on
seven consecutive plays to end the game with a five touchdown advantage.
With the win Oak Mountain
pushed its record to 5-1 and 3-1 in region 6. Next week the Eagles face
possibly their biggest game of the season in the Spain Park Jaguars. A win
could possibly put the Eagles into the playoffs already, still with region
games against Mountain Brook and Hoover remaining. Oak Mountain will try to
set a school record with their fifth straight win at Spain Park.
